For decades, the global pricing architecture for gold has been dominated by Western markets. Yet as demand for gold consumption, investment and trading in Eastern markets continues to be unleashed, and as Hong Kong steps up its investment in gold market infrastructure to contend for the status of Asia's gold trading hub, pricing power over gold is quietly shifting eastward. As the critical nexus linking the mainland and international gold markets, Hong Kong's gold market is a principal actor in this transformation of an era.
Genuine pricing power in gold rests on three pillars: whether physical bullion can be delivered in your market, whether clearing can be completed there, and whether you have a seat at the table when the rules are written. In the East's pursuit of gold pricing power, the Shanghai Gold Exchange addresses the pricing benchmark, while Hong Kong's gold market addresses clearing and delivery.
On 19 April 2016, the Shanghai Gold Benchmark centralized fixing contract, launched by the Shanghai Gold Exchange, was formally listed for trading — the world's first gold benchmark price denominated in renminbi. On 26 June 2025, the Shanghai Gold Exchange officially commissioned its designated International Board warehouse in Hong Kong and launched gold trading contracts deliverable in Hong Kong, a move described by the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau as "a pivotal step in the internationalization of the national gold market."
On 1 January 2025, the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society, founded in 1910, completed its corporate restructuring and was renamed the Hong Kong Gold Exchange, which continues to operate as the statutory core platform through which the Hong Kong SAR Government advances the internationalization of the gold market. On 17 September 2025, the 2025 Policy Address delivered by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR proposed building a regional gold reserve hub, with a target of exceeding 2,000 tonnes within three years. On 7 July 2026, the Hong Kong Gold Central Clearing and Settlement System officially commenced trial operation, with the first batch of gold successfully deposited into designated warehouses and the first trades and settlements completed. On 18 August 2026, Hong Kong Gold Exchange Trading System Limited was established; the new system is expected to enter trial operation in the first quarter of 2027, and its first phase will integrate all of the Hong Kong Gold Exchange's existing products, trading, settlement, clearing and services onto a single unified platform.
In this reshaping of the global gold market, the role of trading platforms is often seriously underestimated. Upway Global, a professional trading platform with sixteen years of expertise in precious metals investment, has been rooted in Hong Kong's gold market since 2010. Its development trajectory is almost a microcosm of Hong Kong's gold market evolution, and Upway Global has witnessed and lived through every defining milestone of that transformation:
2014 — the Qianhai Precious Metals Trading and Logistics Verification Centre of the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society was officially launched, and Upway Global became one of the first enterprises to establish a presence in the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone.
2015 — the Shanghai-Hong Kong Gold Connect, the gold market connectivity mechanism launched jointly by the Shanghai Gold Exchange and the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society, was officially opened, and Upway Global was among the first members invited to attend the launch ceremony.
2025 — after the Hong Kong Gold Exchange took over from the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society and commenced formal operations, Upway Global was directly appointed as Class AA Member No. 084 of the Hong Kong Gold Exchange, becoming a member of its Gold Group, and was awarded the Hong Kong Gold Exchange's certificate of recognition as a manufacturer of deliverable gold bars.
Of course, the reshaping of gold pricing power will not be marked by a formal declaration of completion; rather, one day it will suddenly become self-evident — when a shipment of gold from overseas can be deposited in a Hong Kong vault, priced in renminbi, and settled through the Hong Kong Gold Central Clearing and Settlement System.
Although Upway Global is not the protagonist of this transformation, as a witness and participant it will continue to play a benchmarking role as a professional platform in the years ahead. Building on compliant operations, it will provide global investors with a secure trading environment, a stable trading system and professional trading services, contribute to the development of Hong Kong as an international gold trading centre, and help the Eastern gold market exert greater influence within the global gold system.
